A2 CofC Distance Rules: The 30m and 5m Explained

Quick Answer: With an A2 CofC flying a C2-class drone in subcategory A2, you must keep at least 30m horizontally from uninvolved people. If the drone has a low-speed mode and you use it, that minimum reduces to 5m. These distances apply to people who are not part of your operation.

The two key numbers

The A2 CofC, used with a C2-class drone in subcategory A2, is built around two horizontal separation distances from uninvolved people:

These are horizontal distances, measured along the ground between the drone and uninvolved people.

Why low-speed mode matters

C2-class drones have a low-speed mode that limits the maximum speed of the aircraft. When this mode is engaged, the lower speed reduces the energy involved if something goes wrong, which is why the rules allow flight as close as 5m from uninvolved people in that mode. If you are not in low-speed mode, the 30m minimum applies.

Who the distances apply to

The 30m and 5m minimums relate to uninvolved people — those who are not part of your operation and have not agreed to be involved. People who are part of your operation, and who understand and accept the risk, are treated differently. Regardless of the qualification, you must never fly over assemblies of people.

How this compares to A3

Without the A2 CofC, a comparable drone would generally fall under subcategory A3, which requires flying well away from people and at a significant distance from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas. The A2 CofC and a C2 drone are what allow the much closer 30m or 5m operation in subcategory A2.

Legacy drones

For legacy drones without a C-class mark, the distance rules that apply under transitional arrangements can differ. Do not assume the 30m and 5m figures apply to an unmarked drone — check the current CAP 722 guidance for the exact position for your aircraft.

Applying the rules in practice

Before flying near people with a C2 drone under your A2 CofC, decide whether you will use low-speed mode, and judge the distances accordingly. Maintaining the correct horizontal separation is your responsibility as the remote pilot, alongside keeping the drone in visual line of sight and following the wider Open Category rules.
