A2 CofC Exam Topics: What the Assessment Covers in the UK

Understanding the syllabus, not the answers

This guide explains the knowledge areas the A2 CofC assessment is built on. We do not publish examination questions or answers. The qualification is meant to demonstrate that you genuinely understand how to fly safely near people, so the goal is to learn the material, not to memorise a question bank.

Air law and the framework

A core part of the syllabus is the regulatory framework: the Open Category, how it is structured, and the responsibilities of the remote pilot and the operator. Expect the material to draw on the CAA's published rules, including the principles set out in CAP 722.

The operating subcategories

The differences between subcategories A1, A2 and A3 are central. The assessment material covers which drones fit each subcategory, and the separation distances each requires. For the A2 subcategory specifically, the 30m horizontal minimum from uninvolved people — reducing to 5m in low-speed mode — is a key concept to understand.

Meteorology

Weather affects every flight. The syllabus covers the basics of how wind, visibility and changing conditions influence safe operation, and how a pilot should assess the weather before and during a flight.

Human factors

Human factors examine how the pilot's own state — fatigue, attention, decision-making — affects safety. The material covers recognising your own limitations and building good operating habits.

Operational procedures and risk

The syllabus addresses planning a flight, assessing the site, and managing the risk of flying near uninvolved people. This ties the other topics together into practical decision-making.

The practical declaration

Alongside the theory, the A2 CofC includes a practical self-assessment declaration. You carry out the practical preparation described in the syllabus and confirm you have done so. This is part of demonstrating competency, not a separate written test.

How to study these topics

Use the official material supplied by your chosen Recognised Assessment Entity, and pay particular attention to the subcategory distances and air law, as these underpin much of the assessment. Building genuine understanding is both the proper and the most effective route to passing.
