The A2 CofC Exam: Format, Topics and Preparation Tips

What kind of exam it is

The A2 CofC theory examination is a multiple-choice test administered by the Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE) that runs your course. The CAA sets the knowledge requirements, but the RAE delivers and marks the assessment. The exact number of questions and the pass mark are set by the RAE within the CAA framework.

Topics the exam covers

The examination is built on the same syllabus you study during the course. Broadly, it draws on:

• Air law and the regulatory framework — the Open Category rules and where the A2 subcategory fits.
• Operating subcategories — the differences between A1, A2 and A3, and the separation distances each requires.
• Meteorology — how weather affects safe flight.
• Human factors — how the pilot's own performance and limitations affect safety.
• Operational procedures — planning a flight and managing risk when flying near uninvolved people.

The practical self-assessment

Alongside the theory examination, the A2 CofC includes a practical element handled as a self-assessment declaration. You carry out the practical flying preparation described in the syllabus and confirm you have done so. There is no in-person practical flight test for the A2 CofC.

How to prepare

The most reliable preparation is to work carefully through the official course material from your RAE. Make notes on the subcategory distances and the air law sections, as these underpin many questions. Practising sample questions provided by your RAE helps you become comfortable with the multiple-choice format.

A note on exam answers

We do not publish answers to A2 CofC examination questions, and you should be cautious of any source claiming to. The qualification exists to demonstrate genuine understanding, and the examination format is designed to test that. Studying the syllabus properly is both the legitimate and the most effective approach.

What happens if you do not pass

If you do not pass the theory examination first time, most RAEs allow a re-sit. Re-sit policies and any fee vary by provider, so check the terms before you book. Reviewing the topics you found difficult before attempting again is the sensible approach.
