How to Get Your A2 CofC in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Register as a drone operator first

Before the A2 CofC matters, make sure your operator and flyer registration with the CAA is in order if your drone requires it. The A2 CofC is a competency qualification — it sits alongside, not instead of, the registration requirements for your aircraft.

Step 2: Choose a Recognised Assessment Entity

The A2 CofC is delivered and assessed by an RAE recognised by the CAA. Several RAEs operate across the UK, and they set their own course formats and fees. Compare what is included — study materials, examination, and support — rather than price alone. We do not endorse any particular provider; the choice is yours.

Step 3: Study the syllabus

Your RAE will provide course material covering the knowledge areas the CAA requires. These typically include air law and the Open Category rules, meteorology basics, the operating subcategories, human factors, and managing the risks of flying near people. Work through the material thoroughly, as the examination is built on it.

Step 4: Sit the theory examination

The A2 CofC includes a multiple-choice theory examination administered by the RAE. The examination tests your understanding of the syllabus. We do not publish examination answers; reputable study comes from the official material rather than memorising leaked questions.

Step 5: Complete the practical self-assessment
