Flying a Drone on Long Island: An Alternative to NYC

Long Island Airspace Overview

Long Island stretches approximately 120 miles east from NYC. As distance from JFK and LaGuardia increases, Class B influence diminishes and LAANC ceilings generally increase. However, several smaller airports (Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island MacArthur in Islip) create their own airspace zones. Always check ceilings at your specific location.

Western Nassau County (30-45 Minutes)

Western Nassau remains within Class B outer rings. LAANC ceilings vary but are often restricted. Some improvement over the five boroughs but may not provide unrestricted flying.

Central Suffolk County (60-90 Minutes)

Many areas outside Class B surface area. More non-zero LAANC ceilings. Open spaces including beaches, farmland, and less developed areas provide practical flying locations.

Eastern Suffolk and the East End (2-3 Hours)

Hamptons, Montauk, and North Fork have the lowest airspace density on Long Island. Scenic coastal landscapes for aerial photography. Note that seasonal population surges in summer may bring increased local attention.

State and Local Rules

• New York State jurisdiction applies (NYPD permit does not apply outside five boroughs)
• Nassau and Suffolk Counties may have their own park and open space regulations
• Individual towns and villages may have local drone ordinances
• State parks have their own rules — some allow drones, others do not
• National Wildlife Refuges on Long Island may prohibit drones

Airports to Be Aware Of

Republic Airport (FRG) in Farmingdale, Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in Islip, Francis S. Gabreski Airport (FOK) in Westhampton Beach, and Montauk Airport all create airspace zones to check when planning nearby flights.
