Hudson Valley Overview

The Hudson Valley stretches north from Westchester through Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Ulster Counties. Accessible from NYC in 60-120 minutes by car or Metro-North. The further north, the lower the airspace density.

Airspace Advantages

Most of the Hudson Valley lies outside NYC Class B coverage. Many locations have Class E airspace beginning at 700 or 1,200 ft AGL, meaning the 400 ft federal maximum is typically the primary constraint. However, Stewart International Airport (SWF) near Newburgh has its own controlled airspace.

State Parks and Historic Sites

The Hudson Valley contains numerous state parks and historic sites. Popular sites include Harriman State Park, Walkway Over the Hudson, Storm King State Park, and Minnewaska. Verify current drone policies for any state park or historic site. NPS-administered sites (Vanderbilt Mansion, Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt) prohibit drones under NPS Policy Memorandum 14-05 without a Special Use Permit.

Private Land

Much of the Hudson Valley is privately owned. Permission from landowners is required for takeoff and landing on private property. The region includes agricultural land, vineyards, and estates — respect property boundaries.

Practical Considerations

The river corridor can produce significant wind effects, particularly in narrow sections between hills. Cell service is reliable near the river but may be limited in remote valleys. Plan LAANC authorization and NOTAM checks while you have connectivity.
