The GVC Theory Syllabus: What You Will Learn

Why the theory matters

The General VLOS Certificate (GVC) is competency-based, and the theory syllabus exists to ensure remote pilots have the underpinning knowledge to operate safely in the Specific Category. The exact syllabus is set within the framework defined by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and delivered by Recognised Assessment Entities (RAEs). Core knowledge areas

While individual providers structure their courses differently, the GVC theory generally covers the following areas:

• Air law and responsibilities. The rules that govern drone operations, the categories of operation, and the duties of the remote pilot and operator.
• Airspace. How UK airspace is structured, restricted and controlled areas, and how to avoid conflict with other aircraft.
• Meteorology. How weather affects flight, including wind, visibility and conditions that make flying unsafe.
• Human performance and limitations. Human factors such as workload, fatigue and decision-making that influence safe operation.
• Operating procedures. Pre-flight planning, in-flight management and emergency handling.
• Navigation and charts. Reading and interpreting aeronautical information relevant to your operations.

How the theory is assessed

You demonstrate your understanding of the syllabus by passing a theory examination administered by your RAE. The exam confirms that you have absorbed the knowledge needed before progressing to the practical flight assessment and producing your Operations Manual.

How the syllabus links to your Operations Manual

The theory is not knowledge for its own sake. The understanding you gain feeds directly into your Operations Manual — the document you write to describe how you will operate safely. A strong grasp of air law, airspace and operating procedures makes it far easier to produce a credible manual, which in turn supports your later application to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation.

Preparing for the theory

1. Follow your provider's training materials closely.
2. Pay particular attention to airspace and air law, which are central to safe operation.
3. Relate each topic to the operations you actually intend to carry out.
4. Use the theory to start thinking about how your Operations Manual will read.

Theory is one part of the qualification

Remember that the theory and exam are only part of the GVC. You also complete a practical flight assessment and produce an Operations Manual. And the GVC as a whole remains a prerequisite, not a permission — you still apply to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation, often under PDRA01, before flying in the Specific Category.
