Two ways to learn

UK drone training is delivered by Recognised Assessment Entities (RAEs) in two broad formats: online or self-paced study, and in-person classroom or practical sessions. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the qualification you want, how you learn and your circumstances. This guide compares the two neutrally.

Online and self-paced training

Advantages

• Flexibility: Study at your own pace, around work and family.
• Lower cost: Online courses usually cost less because they require less instructor time.
• No travel: You can learn from anywhere in the UK.
• Revisit material: Recorded content can be reviewed as often as you like.

Things to consider

• Requires self-discipline and motivation.
• Less immediate access to an instructor for questions.
• The GVC practical flight assessment still needs an in-person or structured remote element.

Classroom and in-person training

Advantages

• Direct instructor access: Ask questions and get answers in real time.
• Structured time: Dedicated days away from everyday distractions.
• Peer learning: Learn alongside others and share experiences.
• Hands-on practical: Particularly valuable for the GVC flight assessment.

Things to consider

• Usually more expensive than online study.
• Requires travel and fixed dates.
• Less flexible for those with busy or unpredictable schedules.

Which format suits which qualification?

A2 CofC

The A2 Certificate of Competency is theory-based with a written examination and no mandatory practical flight test. This makes it well suited to online, self-paced study, which is why many candidates choose that route.

GVC

The General VLOS Certificate involves more advanced theory plus a practical flight assessment and an operations manual. The theory can often be studied online, but the practical element typically requires an in-person session or a carefully structured remote assessment.

Matching the format to your learning style

Ask yourself a few honest questions: Do you stay motivated studying alone, or do you need structure? Do you prefer asking questions live, or are you comfortable working things out from materials? How much time and budget do you have? Your answers will point you towards the format most likely to help you succeed.

Blended options

Many providers now offer blended courses that combine online theory with in-person practical sessions. For the GVC in particular, this can give the flexibility of self-paced study while still meeting the practical assessment requirement. When comparing courses, check exactly which elements are online and which are in person.

Whichever format you choose, ensure the provider is a CAA-recognised RAE so that your certificate is valid.
