General VLOS Certificate (GVC): A Complete UK Overview

Quick Answer: The GVC is the basic qualification for flying drones in the Specific Category in the UK. It is issued by a CAA Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE) and involves theory training, a theory exam, a practical flight assessment and submission of an Operations Manual. Holding a GVC is a prerequisite for applying to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation — it is not, by itself, permission to fly.

The General VLOS Certificate, almost always shortened to GVC, is the entry-level qualification that opens the door to the UK's Specific Category of drone operations. If you intend to fly in ways that go beyond the Open Category — closer to people, in more complex environments, or for many commercial purposes — the GVC is usually the first formal step. This overview explains what the GVC is, how it sits within the wider regulatory framework, and what holding one actually allows you to do.

What the GVC is

The GVC is a competency certificate issued by a Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE) — an organisation approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to train and assess remote pilots. The certificate confirms that you have demonstrated an appropriate level of theoretical knowledge and practical flying skill to operate within the Specific Category under a defined set of conditions.

Crucially, "VLOS" stands for Visual Line of Sight. The GVC is built around the assumption that you keep your unmanned aircraft within your unaided visual line of sight at all times. It is the foundation qualification for many of the most common Specific Category operations carried out in the UK.

The four components of the GVC

Earning a GVC is not a single test. It is made up of four distinct elements that you complete with your chosen RAE:

A GVC is not permission to fly

This is the single most important point for newcomers to understand. Holding a GVC does not, on its own, authorise you to carry out Specific Category flights. The GVC is a prerequisite — it is the qualification you must hold before you apply to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation (OA).

The Operational Authorisation is the actual permission. The most common route is to apply against a Pre-Defined Risk Assessment, known as PDRA01, which the CAA has already evaluated. Your accepted Operations Manual and your GVC together form the evidence base for that application.

How the GVC fits the bigger picture

UK drone rules are divided into three categories of operation: Open, Specific and Certified. The Open Category covers lower-risk flying and needs no operational authorisation. The Specific Category covers higher-risk operations that require an authorisation — and this is where the GVC belongs. The Certified Category covers the highest-risk operations and is beyond the scope of the GVC.

Within the Open Category, the upper end (the A2 subcategory) has its own qualification, the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC). The GVC and A2 CofC are different qualifications for different purposes; the GVC is broader and opens the Specific Category, while the A2 CofC stays within the Open Category.

Who should consider a GVC

You should consider a GVC if you want to fly closer to uninvolved people than the Open Category allows, operate heavier aircraft in more demanding settings, or undertake commercial work that does not fit neatly within Open Category limits. Many professional surveyors, inspection operators, filming crews and emergency-support pilots hold a GVC as the basis of their authorisation.

How long it lasts

A GVC is valid for a set period and then needs to be renewed through your RAE, typically by demonstrating continued competence rather than repeating the entire course. Your Operational Authorisation from the CAA is also time-limited and renewed separately. Keeping both current is part of operating responsibly in the Specific Category.
