Obtaining LAANC Airspace Authorization in New York City (2026)

LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) is the FAA's automated system for granting near-real-time airspace authorization in controlled airspace. In New York City, where all five boroughs sit inside Class B airspace, LAANC is the fastest path to the federal airspace authorization required under 14 CFR § 91.131 and § 107.41 — wherever the grid ceiling allows it.

Step 1 — Check the Airspace

Open an FAA-approved UAS application and enter your planned flight location, altitude, date, and time. Read the LAANC ceiling for that grid cell. The FAA divides controlled airspace into a grid; each cell carries a ceiling in feet AGL that is the maximum altitude for automated approval. If the ceiling is 0 ft AGL — the condition across most of Manhattan and the corridors under airport approaches — LAANC cannot authorize at any altitude, and you must go to FAA DroneZone instead (see Step 5).

Step 2 — Submit the LAANC Request

Where the ceiling is above 0 ft, enter your operator name, UAS serial number or Remote ID, location, altitude, and date and time window. Your requested altitude must be at or below the published ceiling. Submit the request through the FAA-approved application.

Step 3 — Receive Authorization

At or below the ceiling, approval is automated and typically returned within seconds. Save the authorization confirmation as a screenshot, PDF, or in-app record. The authorization is specific to location, altitude, date, and time — do not fly outside the approved parameters. LAANC is available to both commercial and recreational operators, free of charge.

Step 4 — Obtain the NYC Permits

LAANC handles only the federal airspace layer. Separately, you must hold an NYPD Unmanned Aircraft permit (apply at dronepermits.nypdonline.org; 30-day lead time for first-time applicants, $150 non-refundable). Location-specific permits — NYC Parks, Port Authority near JFK/LGA/EWR, or NPS Special Use Permits on federal lands — may also apply, along with any Community Board notification required under 38 RCNY § 24-03.

Step 5 — DroneZone (When the Ceiling Is 0 ft)

If the LAANC ceiling is 0 ft or your requested altitude exceeds the ceiling, the only federal path is a manual authorization through FAA DroneZone (faadronezone-access.faa.gov). Provide a flight plan, operational risk assessment, operator qualifications, and supporting documentation. Processing typically takes 90 days or longer, approval is not assured, and recreational operators cannot obtain DroneZone waivers.

Pre-Flight Compliance Checklist

Whatever the controlling airspace at your location, work through the same sequence before take-off so nothing is missed:

1. Verify the LAANC ceiling for your exact grid cell in an FAA-approved UAS application — ceilings change without notice, so check immediately before flight.
2. Obtain FAA airspace authorization — automated LAANC where the ceiling is above 0 ft, or a manual FAA DroneZone authorization where it is 0 ft or you need to exceed the ceiling.
3. Check for active TFRs on FAA NOTAM Search and B4UFLY within one hour of flight; a TFR overrides any authorization or permit you hold.
4. Confirm registration and Remote ID — FAA registration for any drone 0.55 lb (250 g) or more, and Remote ID broadcast under 14 CFR Part 89.
5. Hold the right local permits — inside the five boroughs, the separate NYPD Unmanned Aircraft permit; elsewhere, the applicable state and county or municipal park rules.

FAA civil penalties for violations can reach up to $75,000 per violation under 49 U.S.C. § 46301, in addition to possible certificate action under Part 107 — so when any single item is unresolved, the safe answer is to delay the flight rather than launch.
