Why Drone Flight at Coney Island Is Restricted

Coney Island sits at the southern tip of Brooklyn and draws millions of visitors each year to its beach, boardwalk, and amusement area. Drone operations here face overlapping restrictions from both city law and parks regulations.

The beach itself is classified as NYC Parks property. Under Title 56 RCNY section 1-05(r)(8), operating any unmanned aircraft or model aircraft within a city park is prohibited unless it takes place at a designated model aircraft field. Coney Island Beach is not a designated field.

The Riegelmann Boardwalk and all surrounding streets, parking lots, and public spaces are covered by NYC Administrative Code section 10-126, which makes it unlawful to launch or land a drone anywhere in New York City without NYPD authorization.

Airspace Considerations

Coney Island lies beneath the Class B airspace of John F. Kennedy International Airport, with the airport located approximately seven miles to the east. All drone flights in this area require FAA authorization through LAANC or an airspace waiver, regardless of local permission status. Temporary Flight Restrictions are frequently issued for events at Coney Island, particularly around the Fourth of July and during the Mermaid Parade.

The closest designated model aircraft field to Coney Island is Calvert Vaux Park, located approximately two miles east along Shore Parkway in the Bath Beach neighborhood. This NYC Parks-designated field allows model aircraft and drone operations without individual NYPD authorization, though FAA rules (altitude limits, Remote ID, LAANC) still apply.

Commercial Film and Photography

Commercial drone operators who need aerial footage of Coney Island — for real estate marketing, tourism content, or film production — must obtain both NYPD authorization and, if applicable, a NYC Parks Special Event Permit.
