When Renewal Is Due

Your drone registration is valid for exactly 12 months from the date you completed your initial registration or your most recent renewal. The expiry date is displayed in your CAA account on the registration portal. There is no automatic renewal, and there is no multi-year registration option. Each year, you must actively log in, retake the test, and pay the fee to maintain your registered status.

The CAA typically sends an email reminder approximately four weeks before your registration expires. This reminder is sent to the email address associated with your registration account. If you have changed your email address since registering, it is essential to update it in your CAA account to ensure you receive these notifications.

However, relying solely on the email reminder is not advisable. Email filters, spam folders, and outdated contact details can all prevent the reminder from reaching you. Setting a personal calendar reminder for your renewal date is a sensible precaution.

How to Renew Step by Step

The renewal process mirrors the initial registration in most respects. Here is what to expect.

Step 1: Log Into Your CAA Account

Visit register-drones.caa.co.uk and log in with the same credentials you used during your original registration. If you have forgotten your password, the portal offers a standard password reset function. Your existing account details, including your Operator ID, are retained between registration periods.

Step 2: Retake the Flyer ID Theory Test

At renewal, you must pass the Flyer ID theory test again. The test follows the same format as the initial assessment: 20 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 16 correct answers. The questions may differ from those you encountered during your first registration, as the CAA updates its question bank to reflect current regulations and common compliance issues.

Retaking the test annually serves an important purpose. Drone regulations evolve, and the test ensures that registered operators maintain awareness of current rules. Changes to airspace designations, new restricted zones, or amendments to the Air Navigation Order are reflected in the test content.

Step 3: Pay the Renewal Fee

The renewal fee is the same as the initial registration fee: 10.33 GBP as of May 2026. Payment is made online by debit or credit card. Upon successful payment and completion of the theory test, your Flyer ID and Operator ID are revalidated for another 12 months.

Step 4: Confirm Your Operator ID Label

Your Operator ID number does not change at renewal. You do not need to relabel your drones. The same Operator ID that you attached to your aircraft after initial registration remains valid and correct throughout subsequent renewal periods.

What Happens If You Miss the Renewal Deadline

If your registration expires and you have not renewed, you are no longer legally registered to fly a drone in the UK. There is no grace period. From the moment your registration lapses, any drone flight you conduct is treated the same as flying without ever having registered.

The legal consequences of flying with expired registration include the same penalties as flying unregistered. Enforcement can result in a fixed penalty notice or, in more serious cases, prosecution under the Air Navigation Order. Fines can reach up to 1,000 GBP. If an incident occurs while you are flying with expired registration, any insurance you hold may be invalidated, leaving you personally liable for damages.

If your registration does lapse, you can re-register at any time by logging into your account, retaking the test, and paying the fee. You do not need to create a new account or obtain a new Operator ID. Your existing account and ID are preserved, and the renewal simply reactivates them for a fresh 12-month period.

Does Your Operator ID Change at Renewal

No. Your Operator ID is a persistent identifier assigned to you or your organisation at initial registration. It remains the same through every renewal cycle. This is an important practical point because it means the label on your drone does not need to be updated each year. Once you have correctly labelled your aircraft with your Operator ID, that label remains valid indefinitely, provided you keep your registration current.

Your Flyer ID also retains the same number through renewals, though the validity period resets each time you complete the renewal process and pass the test.

Renewal for Organisations

If you registered as an organisation rather than an individual, the renewal process follows the same steps. The person responsible for the organisation's drone operations logs into the organisation's CAA account, passes the theory test, and pays the fee. The Operator ID associated with the organisation is renewed for another 12 months.

Each individual pilot within the organisation who holds a Flyer ID must also renew independently. The organisation's Operator ID renewal does not automatically extend the Flyer IDs of its pilots. This is because the Flyer ID is personal to the individual and confirms their own competence, not the organisation's compliance.

Planning Ahead for Renewal

The simplest approach to renewal management is to treat it as an annual administrative task. When you receive your initial registration confirmation or complete a renewal, note the expiry date and set a reminder for two weeks before. This gives you time to log in, study any regulatory updates, pass the test, and pay the fee without any risk of a gap in your registration.
