Key Rules for Drone Flying at Tintagel

Tintagel Castle, perched on Cornwall's dramatic Atlantic coastline, is one of England's most visited heritage sites. The ruins, the famous footbridge and the surrounding cliff formations create an irresistible target for aerial photography. Here is what the regulations actually say.

English Heritage Policy

English Heritage does not permit recreational drone pilots to take off or land at any site in its care, including Tintagel Castle and its grounds. This means you cannot launch from the castle headland, the approach paths, the beach area below the castle or any land English Heritage manages.

However, English Heritage has clarified an important distinction: drone pilots who comply fully with the UK Drone Code may choose to fly over English Heritage sites, provided they launch from a location outside the site boundary. This is because English Heritage controls its own land but does not control the airspace above it — that falls under CAA jurisdiction.

For professional or commercial filming, you must submit paperwork, risk assessments and flight plans for English Heritage approval. Commercial flights are typically required to take place outside visitor opening hours.

CAA Registration (2026)

• Flyer ID — required for any drone 100 g or more. Free online theory test via the CAA.
• Operator ID — required for drones 250 g–25 kg, or 100 g–250 g with a camera. Costs £10.33/year.
• Remote ID — UK1–UK6 class drones must broadcast Remote ID from January 2026. Legacy and UK0 drones with cameras have until January 2028.

Altitude and Cliff Terrain

The 120 m altitude limit is measured from the closest point on the earth's surface, not from your take-off point. At Tintagel, where cliffs drop steeply to sea level, this distinction is critical. If you launch from a clifftop at 80 m above sea level and fly out over the water, your drone may appear to be at moderate height relative to your position — but it could be well above 120 m relative to the sea surface below. You must adjust your flight altitude as the ground falls away beneath you.

Airspace Around Tintagel

Tintagel is not within an airport FRZ, which simplifies matters considerably. Nonetheless, several airspace factors apply:

• Newquay Airport (RAF St Mawgan) — located roughly 15 miles to the south-west. Its FRZ does not reach Tintagel, but always verify using NATS Drone Assist before flying.
• Military low-flying — Cornwall occasionally sees military low-flying training. Check NOTAMs on the day of your flight.
• Coastal wind and thermals — Tintagel's exposed headlands generate strong updrafts and turbulent air, especially when the wind comes off the Atlantic. This is an operational hazard, not a legal restriction, but it has caused drone losses along this coast.
• Search and rescue helicopters — the RNLI and HM Coastguard operate along this stretch of coast. If you spot a helicopter, land your drone immediately.

Best Spots Near Tintagel for Legal Drone Flights

Since you cannot launch from the castle grounds, consider these nearby alternatives — always verify landowner consent:

• Glebe Cliff (above Tintagel Haven) — the clifftop area near the parish church may offer a viable launch point outside English Heritage boundaries. Confirm the exact boundary using the English Heritage site map. This spot provides a direct line of sight to the castle headland.
• Barras Nose — the headland south of the castle is partly National Trust land (where launching is prohibited) and partly other ownership. Identify the Trust boundary carefully using OS maps.
• Trebarwith Strand — roughly one mile south of Tintagel, this beach offers open space for take-off. The foreshore between high and low tide may be Crown Estate land. Verify via The Crown Estate's interactive coastal map.
• Bossiney Haven — a small cove north of Tintagel village. Less crowded than Tintagel itself, offering potential launch space away from the heritage site.

When flying over the castle from an external launch point, maintain at least 50 m horizontal distance from visitors on the footbridge, the castle ruins and the surrounding paths.

Penalties for Breaking Drone Rules

• Launching from English Heritage land without permission — trespass (civil liability). English Heritage may ban you from the site and report the incident.
• Flying without CAA registration — fines up to £1,000.
• Endangering an aircraft — fines up to £2,500 on summary conviction.
• Reckless or negligent flying — unlimited fines and potential imprisonment.
• Flying over people — breaching the 50 m horizontal distance rule is an offence under the Air Navigation Order. The castle attracts thousands of visitors daily during peak season, making this rule particularly relevant.
