Drone Rules in Salisbury — Boscombe Down Military & Stonehenge Proximity (2026)

Quick answer: Salisbury sits in one of the most complex airspace environments in southern England. Defence Boscombe Down, a major MOD test and evaluation airfield, is located approximately 10 km north-east of the city. The Salisbury Plain military training area and its associated Danger Areas extend across the landscape north of the city. Stonehenge, 13 km to the north, has a specific Restriction of Flying regulation during solstice periods. Within the city itself, the main constraints are Salisbury Cathedral grounds, council land permissions and standard Open Category rules.

Defence Boscombe Down

Defence Boscombe Down is an active MOD airfield located near Amesbury, approximately 10 km north-east of Salisbury city centre. It serves as the home of the MOD’s aircraft testing and evaluation operations and handles a wide range of military and experimental aircraft.

Boscombe Down operates a Flight Restriction Zone. The FRZ extends 2.5 nautical miles from the runway with approach and departure lane buffers. Salisbury city centre falls outside this FRZ, but the north-eastern outskirts of the city and the roads toward Amesbury may be affected. Always verify the exact FRZ boundary using the NATS Drone Assist app before flying anywhere north or east of Salisbury.

In addition to the standard FRZ, Boscombe Down’s status as an MOD facility means that enhanced restrictions may apply. Since 2026, the CAA has tightened rules on drone flights close to MOD sites. Check NOTAMs and the NATS airspace map before every flight in this area.

Salisbury Plain Danger Areas

Salisbury Plain is one of the largest military training areas in the United Kingdom, covering approximately 300 square kilometres north of the city. The plain contains multiple Danger Areas (designated in aeronautical charts as EG D123, D124, D125 and D126) where live firing and military exercises take place.

Drone operations within active Danger Areas are prohibited without permission from the Senior Air Operations Officer at Salisbury Plain Air Operations. When these Danger Areas are active, they restrict all aerial activity from the surface upward. Check NOTAM information before any flight in or near the plain.

The boundary of the Salisbury Plain training area begins only a few kilometres north of Salisbury city centre. If you are flying from locations in the northern suburbs or from the water meadows north of the city, you may be closer to active military airspace than you realise.

Stonehenge Restricted Airspace

Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument located approximately 13 km north of Salisbury near Amesbury, is subject to a specific flying restriction under The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Stonehenge) Regulations 2023 (SI 2023/492). This restriction prohibits flight within a defined area around Stonehenge during the summer solstice and winter solstice periods for public safety and security reasons.

Outside solstice periods, Stonehenge itself does not have a permanent airspace restriction. However, the monument and its surrounding landscape are managed by English Heritage. English Heritage does not permit drone take-off or landing from its managed land without prior written permission. The wider Stonehenge World Heritage Site landscape is partly owned by the National Trust, which also prohibits drone operations from its land without consent.

Salisbury Cathedral and City Centre

Salisbury Cathedral, with its 123-metre spire (the tallest in England), sits within the Cathedral Close — a walled precinct managed by the Cathedral Chapter. The Close is private land and drone operations require the Chapter’s written permission.

The city centre around the Market Place is compact and pedestrianised during busy periods. Under the CAA Open Category A3 sub-category, drones weighing 250 g or more must maintain a horizontal distance of at least 50 m from uninvolved persons. The narrow medieval streets and market activity make this difficult during trading hours.

Wiltshire Council manages parks and open spaces in and around Salisbury, including Queen Elizabeth Gardens and Churchill Gardens along the River Avon. Contact the council to request permission for drone operations from council-managed land.

Water Meadows and River Avon

The historic water meadows south and east of the Cathedral Close — Harnham Water Meadows in particular — are among the most photographed landscapes in Wiltshire. These meadows are privately managed and some sections are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

SSSI designation does not create an airspace restriction, but Natural England advises against drone activity that may disturb wildlife in sensitive habitats. If your flight might affect nesting birds or other protected species, you could be in breach of wildlife protection legislation regardless of CAA compliance.

Penalties

Open Category offences carry fines of up to £2,500. Flying within MOD airspace or Danger Areas without permission is a serious offence under the Air Navigation Order 2016 and may result in prosecution. Wiltshire Police, the MOD Police and the CAA enforce drone regulations across the Salisbury area.
