Drone Rules in Middlesbrough — Transporter Bridge & Teesside Airport (2026)

Teesside International Airport FRZ

Teesside International Airport (ICAO: EGNV), located near Darlington to the west of Middlesbrough, is an active aerodrome with scheduled passenger and freight services. The airport maintains a Flight Restriction Zone that extends from its runway thresholds.

Middlesbrough town centre lies approximately 12 km east of the airport, placing most of the urban area outside the FRZ. However, the western fringes of the borough — particularly areas around Thornaby, Ingleby Barwick and Yarm — are closer to the airport and may fall within or near the FRZ boundary depending on the exact geometry of the zone.

Before flying anywhere in the western half of the Tees Valley, check the NATS Drone Assist app or the CAA’s interactive drone map. Flying within the FRZ without prior permission from the airport’s air traffic control is a criminal offence carrying penalties of up to five years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

Transporter Bridge and the River Tees

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, a Grade II* listed structure spanning the River Tees between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence, is one of the most distinctive landmarks in the North East. The bridge stands approximately 49 m above the river at its highest point and carries a suspended gondola for passengers and vehicles.

The Transporter Bridge and its immediate surroundings are managed by Middlesbrough Council. Drone flights in the area must account for several factors:

• The bridge structure itself extends vertically through the airspace, creating a physical obstacle for drone operations.
• Pedestrians and vehicles using the gondola are uninvolved persons under CAA regulations, requiring appropriate separation distances.
• The river banks on both sides include public footpaths and industrial areas, each with different land ownership considerations.
• The River Tees may be subject to port authority regulations. Teesport and associated river traffic operate downstream towards the estuary.

If you intend to photograph the Transporter Bridge from the air, consider flying from the south bank at a location east or west of the bridge where you can maintain visual line of sight while keeping the required distance from uninvolved persons on the bridge and its approaches.

Middlesbrough Town Centre

Middlesbrough town centre is a built-up area under the Air Navigation Order 2016. Under Open Category A3, drones weighing 250 g or more must maintain a minimum horizontal distance of 150 m from residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas.

Drones under 250 g (A1 sub-category) may fly over built-up areas but must not be intentionally flown over crowds. The area around the Captain Cook Shopping Centre, the railway station and Albert Park can be busy during the day, limiting practical flying opportunities in the town centre.

Albert Park and Stewart Park

Albert Park, located south of the town centre, is a Victorian public park managed by Middlesbrough Council. Stewart Park, further south in the Marton area, includes the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum and is also council-managed.

Both parks are popular with families and dog walkers. Under the Open Category, maintaining 50 m horizontal separation from uninvolved persons is required for drones weighing 250 g or more. Contact Middlesbrough Council before flying from either park to confirm whether park byelaws permit drone take-off and landing.

Eston Nab and Roseberry Topping

The elevated ground south of Middlesbrough offers some of the best drone flying opportunities in the area:

• Eston Nab: A prominent hill on the southern edge of Middlesbrough with panoramic views across Teesside and the North Sea. The hilltop is relatively open with fewer people than urban parks. Verify land ownership as part of the area is managed by community groups.
• Roseberry Topping: Located further south near Great Ayton, this iconic hill within the North York Moors National Park offers dramatic scenery. The National Park Authority may have specific policies regarding drone use — check before flying.
• South Gare: The breakwater at the mouth of the River Tees provides open coastal flying space, though wind conditions can be challenging and the area is used by anglers and walkers.

2026 CAA Registration and Rules

• Flyer ID: Required for drones weighing 100 g or more. Free online theory test via the CAA.
• Operator ID: Required for drones weighing 250 g or more. Must be displayed on the aircraft.
• Maximum altitude: 120 m (400 ft) above the surface.
• Visual line of sight: Maintain unaided visual contact with the drone at all times.
• Night flying: A flashing green light is mandatory from January 2026 for any drone flown at night.
• Remote ID: Drones with UK class marks (UK1 through UK6) must broadcast identification information.

Penalties

Open Category offences carry fines of up to £2,500. Entering the Teesside Airport FRZ without permission can result in up to five years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine. Cleveland Police and the CAA are the enforcing authorities across the Middlesbrough area.
